Finding games to play
You can join the #netplay Discord channel here: https://discord.gg/JyW6ZgBUyS. This channel is for netplay discussion.
Syncing saves and settings
Save files, cheats, and settings are synced from the first player (their save files and settings will be used for everyone).
Controller
You should test your controller in single-player/local mode before trying netplay. Make sure your controller works as expected for a single-player game.
Local Input Delay
A number is recommended to you in the waiting room, which is based on your ping to the other players. Setting this too low will cause the game to freeze as it waits for inputs from other players. It can be decreased in-game by pressing Alt+[, and increased by pressing Alt+].
Only the first player can change this value.
FAQ
Is P2P supported?
Yes, Gopher64 networking is always a full mesh P2P. If a direct connection cannot be made between peers, it will automatically fall back to using a TURN server.
What do I do if the game is laggy/choppy?
Have player 1 try increasing the input delay by pressing Alt+].
It could also be that one (or more) of the players cannot run the game at full speed. They could try lowering the resolution upscaling setting if it is set higher than 1x (this doesn't take effect until the game is restarted).
Why does it say "Still connecting to netplay peers...Please wait..." when a match starts?
Establishing a P2P mesh over the internet can be complicated. When the match begins, the emulator attempts various NAT traversal methods in order to get every player directly connected to every other player. Depending on the number of players and the types of internet connections involved, this can take a while.
Is rollback supported?
No, although Gopher64 uses GGRS, rollback is not currently supported.
Do I need to forward ports to host a session?
No, Gopher64 uses WebRTC for networking, including STUN/TURN for NAT traversal; port forwarding is not necessary.
What is the bandwidth usage like?
No specific measurements have been taken, but Gopher64 netplay only sends key input data, not savestates or graphics, so bandwidth usage will be very low.
